The Department of Energy is offering nearly $300 million in rebates on the purchase of select ENERGY STAR® qualified home appliances through the 50 states, to stimulate the economy and encourage the use of energy-efficient appliances.

Q. What is Cash For Appliances?

A. It’s a rebate program funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and offered through the 50 states. The official name for the program is the Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program (EEARP). Nearly $300 million in funding will be allocated to the states so that they can offer rebates on consumer purchases of new ENERGY STAR® qualified home appliances. These funds are being offered to stimulate the economy and to help the country save energy.

Q. How long will the program last?

A. Most states will run their programs for about a week to a month initially. If there is any money left over, a state may choose to run a second rebate promotion period. You should make your purchases as early as possible after your state launches its program, and also check your state energy office website to see if there are any notifications about funds nearing exhaustion. (The funds need to be spent by 2012, but we anticipate the money will actually run out a lot sooner.)

Q. What products are eligible for rebates?

The ZIP code tool at the top of this page will show you what appliances qualify in your area. Products in these categories which are ENERGY STAR® qualified will be eligible, depending on the details of your state’s program:
Refrigerators
Freezers
Washers
Dishwashers
Water heaters
Central air conditioners
Room air conditioners
Heat pumps (air source and geothermal)
Boilers
Furnaces (oil and gas)
Some states may require that the appliance also have a CEE Tier 1, 2 or 3 qualification, in addition to ENERGY STAR®. These appliances go even further in reducing your energy bills and reducing the impact on the environment. Even if your state doesn’t require CEE Tier qualification, you’ll enjoy the benefits of stepping up to this level of efficiency. (Just look out for certain appliance brands that sacrifice performance for energy efficiency.)

Q. What does ENERGY STAR® qualified mean?

A. ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances incorporate advanced technologies that use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models. The money you save on your utility bills can more than make up for the cost of a more expensive but more efficient ENERGY STAR® model. When shopping, look for the ENERGY STAR® mark on the EnergyGuide label of the appliance—that’s how to tell if it’s ENERGY STAR® qualified.

Q. Does Maytag® make appliances that are eligible for the rebates?

A. Yes, Maytag® makes ENERGY STAR® qualified washers, refrigerators, dishwashers, water heaters, air conditioners, furnaces and heat pumps. So depending on which kinds of appliances your state will offer rebates on, you should have lots of choices.

Q. I’m going to need a new appliance soon. Should I wait until my state launches its rebate program?

A. You can use the ZIP code tool at left to see if your state has launched its program. We recommend buying your desired Maytag® appliance soon, because...
The discounts and rebates currently offered by retailers may equal or exceed the rebate your state will offer.
Your utility company may already offer a rebate when you purchase an energy efficient appliance.
Your state might not offer a rebate on the appliance you’re thinking about buying.
The states are likely to run their programs for a short period of time. If you miss the window of purchase, you may end up not getting a rebate at all.
Some states may require proof of disposal or recycling of your old appliance. So if you’re a first time buyer, you’re better off buying the appliance now.

Q. How will I be able to figure out the exact rebate amount available to me on a specific appliance model?

A. Use the Rebate Finder on this page to see if rebates are offered on a particular appliance in your state. The Rebate Finder will also provide information on any rebates available from your local utility. Also check our other special offers and savings available at The Home Depot.

Q. What about my old appliances? Will I get anything if I turn them in?

A. The Department of Energy has requested that the states submit their plans for recycling old appliances as part of their application to receive rebate funding. Most states will not require you to haul in your old appliance. But some states will offer extra money for those who recycle old appliances; some will require that you certify that you’ve properly recycled or disposed of the old appliance; and some will require certification that the old appliance has been replaced by the new one.
